NaPoWriMo Day 26: A Family Resemblance

I am writing off prompt today. I hosted a small birthday party for my mother yesterday. She will be 90 in September and my gift to her, and hopefully something she will enjoy, is to spend time with her favorite friends in small group settings. Yesterday was Party Number One. One of the guests related a story that inspired this poem.

A Family Resemblance
He burns with fever,
cheeks scarlet,
eyes glazed.
She bundles him
in his snowsuit,
gaudy knit hat snug
around tiny face.
Her mother drives,
thick woolen
babushka tied warmly
under her chin,
face pale,
eyes enormous with worry.
It is at that moment
she sees it, her small son
is the image of her
beautiful mother.

I am glad you preserved this story in poetry. It will be a treasure forever.
