She remembers a scarf bright as summer,
the clatter of wire hangers,
her mother standing in front of the closet
in a white slip, deep grooves cut
into her shoulders from her bra straps,
the fake black leather jewelry box
with rows of clip-on earrings
resting on fancy red velvet,
the scent of Evyan's White Shoulders,
infusing, pervading each drawer.
Sixty years have passed since that day;
this time she sorts through
her mother's closet alone.
NOTES:
My mother died three years ago at age 93.

Marianne, you bring back so many memories with your words. My Mother lived to age 91 and when she passed there were four of us to do all the sorting. And we tried very hard to keep it positive. Yet, at the end of the day, we all had to go our separate ways filled with all those lingering memories. Mothers have a force about them that can't be equaled anywhere or time. Really like how you brought her to life with your detailed images of scents, color, and associations.
