Prompt for Day 26
Find a poem that you started, or perhaps one you abandoned. Read it through. Highlight the lines or phrases that please you. Do not cross anything out (yet)! You now have two choices: finish the poem or take the parts you like and begin a brand new piece. There is a third option: take the parts you don’t like and use them to inspire a new poem.
This is my parent's love story. I started it a long time ago. Time to finish it!
Waldorf Astoria Minnesota
Like star-crossed lovers in a movie,
they almost met two years earlier.
This love story is uniquely theirs,
time colliding with circumstance
until fate intervened.
And so it begins . . .
1943, New York City, the Big Apple.
It would be fitting to say
they ran into each other
at the Waldorf's Starlight Roof Restaurant
under blinking sky-blue stars,
breathing the same magical New York air;
that their eyes met across a crowded room
or perhaps a chance encounter
when she dropped her handbag
and he stopped to pick it up.
But it didn't happen that way.
Just back from overseas,
Cary Grant handsome in his Army uniform,
he was the guest of a Park Avenue couple
wanting to wine and dine a soldier.
She was a breathtaking combination
of Rita Hayworth's sultry good looks
and the elegance of a young Grace Kelly,
there for dinner with a friend.
But it didn't happen that way.
Their destiny inescapable,
they met on a blind-date
back home in Minnesota.
Lunch became dinner and romance.
Talking for hours
they discovered their paths
had almost crossed once before
at a different restaurant,
in a different city,
on a different night.
This time, it happened.
